Maryland Mud Pie with Oreo Whipped Cream
A rich homemade chocolate pudding pie nestled in an Oreo cookie crust and finished with Oreo whipped cream, chocolate drizzle, and mini chocolate chips. Every bite delivers creamy chocolate filling, crunchy cookie crust, and plenty of cookies-and-cream flavor.
Maryland Mud Pie is my answer to every serious chocolate craving. Instead of instant pudding, this version starts with a rich homemade chocolate custard made with real dark chocolate, cocoa powder, heavy cream, and just a touch of espresso powder to deepen the chocolate flavor. Finished with Oreo whipped cream and a generous sprinkle of mini chocolate chips, it's the kind of dessert that disappears long before the cookout is over.

Yield: 1 (9-inch) pie, 8 servings
Prep Time: 40 minutes
Bake Time: 10 minutes
Chill Time: 4 hours (preferably overnight)
Ingredients
Oreo Cookie Crust
1 Oreo Cookie Crust (see my Oreo Cookie Crust Recipe for complete instructions)
Chocolate Pudding Filling
600g 2% milk (2½ cups)
400g heavy cream (1⅔ cups)
150g granulated sugar (¾ cup)
45g cornstarch (⅓ cup + 1 tbsp)
30g unsweetened cocoa powder (⅓ cup)
1 tsp espresso powder
½ tsp kosher salt
4 large egg yolks, room temperature
226g dark chocolate (2 standard 113g bars), finely chopped
28g unsalted butter (2 tbsp)
1 tsp vanilla extract
Oreo Whipped Cream
240g heavy cream (1 cup)
25g powdered sugar (3 tbsp)
½ tsp vanilla extract
60g crushed Oreo cookies (about 6 cookies)
Garnishes
Mini chocolate chips
Chocolate sauce or chocolate ganache
Man-Made Tip: This isn't instant pudding. The filling is a true cooked chocolate custard made with real dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and cream. The result is a richer flavor and silkier texture that's worth the extra effort.
Instructions
1. Prepare the Chocolate Pudding
In a medium saucepan, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, sugar, cornstarch, cocoa powder, espresso powder, and salt.
Cook over medium heat, whisking frequently, until steaming hot but not boiling.
In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks.
Slowly ladle about 1 cup of the hot milk mixture into the yolks while whisking constantly to temper them.
Pour the tempered yolks back into the saucepan.
Continue cooking over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the pudding thickens and begins to bubble, about 5 to 7 minutes.
Meanwhile, melt the chopped dark chocolate and butter together in the microwave using 20-second intervals, stirring after each until smooth.
Remove the pudding from the heat and stir in the melted chocolate mixture and vanilla until completely smooth.
2. Fill the Pie
Pour the warm pudding into the prepared Oreo Cookie Crust.
Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the pudding to prevent a skin from forming.
Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
3. Make the Oreo Whipped Cream
Beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until medium-stiff peaks form.
Reserve a small handful of the crushed Oreo cookies for garnish.
Fold the remaining crushed Oreos into the whipped cream.
Spread or pipe the whipped cream over the chilled pie.
4. Garnish
Sprinkle the reserved Oreo crumbs over the whipped cream.
Top with mini chocolate chips and drizzle with chocolate sauce or ganache.
5. Chill
Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Recipe Notes
Espresso powder deepens the chocolate flavor without making the pie taste like coffee.
Use a good-quality dark chocolate between 60% and 70% cacao for the richest flavor.
Pressing plastic wrap directly onto the pudding prevents a skin from forming.
For the cleanest slices and best flavor, chill the pie overnight before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use boxed chocolate pudding?
You can, but the homemade pudding is what makes this pie special. It has a richer chocolate flavor, silkier texture, and a more luxurious finish than boxed mixes.
Why add espresso powder?
Espresso powder enhances the chocolate without making the filling taste like coffee.
Can I make this pie ahead of time?
Absolutely. It's an ideal make-ahead dessert and tastes even better after an overnight chill.
Can I freeze Maryland Mud Pie?
Yes. Wrap the pie tightly and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.
Optional Adult Variation
For an adults-only version, stir one of the following into the finished pudding along with the vanilla:
30g Kahlúa (2 tbsp)
30g Bourbon (2 tbsp)
30g Baileys Irish Cream (2 tbsp)
Storage
Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
